Mark Jensen, Founder and Manager

Passionate about mountains and the outdoors, I shelved a corporate career in the UK and settled in Chamonix in the French Alps. Over the years, I have trekked, climbed, skied and mountain biked in mountains from wild Alaska in the West to the mighty Himalayas in the East, and quite a lot in between. But Chamonix and the Western Alps is now my local playground and I take great pleasure in showing people around here and sharing my knowledge of the area. I am qualified as an International Mountain Leader (UIMLA) and as an alpine ski and telemark instructor (ISIA). In addition to running the day to day operations of Alpine Treks, I am out there guiding and instructing most days, summer and winter. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else...

Our Guides and Leaders

At Alpine Treks, we only use professional and fully qualified International Mountain Leaders (Accompagnateurs en Montagne), members of UIMLA, for our treks in the Alps. Not only is this a legal requirement in most of the Alpine countries but it is also your guarantee of a safe and knowledgeable leader on your trek. To learn more about this qualifications please click on the UIMLA logo to the left. All our leaders are multi lingual and English speaking.

Our Philosophy

In a market dominated by a handful of very large adventure travel companies who sell standardised trekking trips by the thousands, we believe there is a need for a small dynamic trekking company whose main focus it is to offer a friendly and personalised trekking experience of the highest quality at competitive prices. Alpine Treks has achieved this by keeping the numbers in our groups low, using the best guides and leaders and always be prepared to change our itineraries to suit the needs of our group members and the prevailing conditions. Our trips are run in areas where we live and have extensive personal experience to ensure that we can provide our members with interesting insights about the local region, be it the alpine flora or the local wine and cheese. We believe that a trekking holiday is not just about walking but also very much about experiencing the local culture and making your precious time off as enjoyable as possible. We do not have costly offices and unnecessary administration and marketing, so rest assured that the cost of the trips goes towards providing a great service.

Environment

The mountains are refuges for many of the planet's most rare animal and flower species. Yet these refuges are increasingly threatened by advancing changes to the land and by changing climate patterns. Glaciers are retreating and permafrost is melting at alarming rates. At Alpine Treks we respect the nature and all of it’s inhabitants. We are committed to running our trips with minimal impact on the environment and we do expect the same from our group members. We believe that the saying “Take only memories, leave only footprints” is more valid today than it ever was. We also politely encourage our group members travelling to the Alps to offset the CO2 emissions caused by their travel through www.climatecare.org or a similar organisation. Please have a look at our sustainable travel tips here.
