As individuals, there is a lot we can do to minimise our environmental footprint when we are travelling. Below, we have suggested a few tips and ideas which you may wish to adopt when travelling in the mountains. A few simple ideas really can make a difference.

1. Ways to Protect the Environment

2. BulletIf possible, use public transport to/from the start/finish place of your trip. Watch the video to the right >

4. shapeimage_3_link_0Where possible, stay in mountain accommodation that utilise renewable energy sources, local produce and have an environmental policy.

5. shapeimage_3_link_1Use solar powered battery chargers to re-charge your electronic equipment such as mobile phones, GPS, Ipods etc. For example, check out the > Solio charger.

6. shapeimage_3_link_2Use dedicated toilet facilities in huts, shelters etc.

7. shapeimage_3_link_3Avoid buying foods wrapped in layers of plastic and cardboard. Watch the video to the right >

8. shapeimage_3_link_4Do not litter. Bring all your trash out with you and dispose of it responsibly.
Tip: Re-pack your trail food before leaving to avoid bringing unnecessary litter in the mountains and dispose of the packaging and wrappings responsibly.

9. BulletBuy organic produce and buy supplies locally in order to cut down on unnecessary transport and to support local producers.
Tip: Why not make your own trail food? See an example of home-made > trail bars here and > trail mix here.

10. BulletUse dedicated trails and paths to minimise the areas of erosion.

11. BulletDo not feed wild animals.

12. BulletDo not scare, follow or in any other way disturb wild animals. This is even more crucial in winter.
Fact: when a chamois runs 30 meter in fresh snow it uses up the equivalent of 8 days of summer food reserves.

13. BulletDo not pick or damage wild flowers.
